CDRN Interactive and Sensing Technology Workshop
In conjunction with the Mobile Nation Conference
March 23 - 26, 2007, Toronto, Canada

Please visit: http://echo.iat.sfu.ca/mobilenation_workshop/

Mobile Nation Conference and the Canadian Design Research Network co-host a multi-day workshop as a part of the Mobile Nation Summit conference program. We invite you to participate in one of three hands-on workshops where you will have the opportunity to collaborate, share, and learn about new interactive and sensing technology platforms developed for mobile devices. All workshops will be led by originators or key members of the support team of the technology platforms and environments.

Fees

OCAD & CDRN Affiliated Students $25
Non-CDRN Affiliated Students $45
Delegates $90
Space is limited, register early to avoid disappointment.

Collaborative Workshops
Saturday, March 24: 2.00-6.00 pm &
Sunday, March 25: 9.15 am - 12.00 pm

MEE - led by Tom Donaldson
MEE is a powerful code-generator and library set for rich media mobile applications, particularly those drawing on Bluetooth wireless technology and GPS-based location information. The workshop will focus on the use of MEE in the prototyping and development of a mobile application. Starting with existing applications, workshop participants will quickly develop their own locative and proximity- based, rich-media mobile application.

MIDAS 2.0 - led by Tek-Jin Nam
MIDAS is a media interaction design toolkit for designers with non- technical backgrounds to easily implement interaction design applications, such as physical computing, tangible user interfaces, and interactive media art. MIDAS supports simplified methods for connecting your system to external input/output hardware and for building augmented reality (AR) applications within Macromedia Director.

Arduino Fever: an introduction to Arduino, the open-source prototyping platform - led by Daniel Jolliffe
What's small, blue, open-source and a way to both design for and teach the craft of interactive object prototyping? Vancouver Artist Daniel Jolliffe leads this workshop on Arduino, the little blue open-source prototyping environment. Arduino is a global collaborative effort of numerous universities, researchers and average hobbyists that has garnered over 5000 users since its inception in 2005. Conceived as quick-prototyping tool for artists, designers and tinkerers alike, the $35 Arduino board allows for interactive designs that include sensors, motors, displays and a host of other devices. More than just technology, the Arduino environment is also a global community of users that challenges the norms of electronics fabrication, instruction and design.

In this workshop you will become a part of that global collaborative community. Participants will work through a number of exercises that demonstrate and explore the possibilities of the Arduino. These include the use of LED's, flexible sensors, switches, Servo motors, LCD displays, photocells and relays in working interactive circuits. The workshop includes a demonstration of the new wireless Bluetooth Arduino module, and a discussion of the resources available for teaching, experimentation and collaboration through the Arduino community. Participants leave the workshop with ability to prototype Arduino circuits, and an understanding of the project's technical and social possibilities.

Participant info: This is an introductory workshop. No prior knowledge of electronics is required, although any you have will of course be helpful. All required materials will be available for loan during the workshop.
