Cicadas

The social theory of swarming combined with the technique of electromagnetic frequency (EMF) detection. Users talking on cell phones at certain locations along our target development area trigger swarms of virtual cicadas, sound and light emitting devices installed in trees, drawing parallels between signal emission as a communication imperative in both the human and insect worlds.

I Spy

A twist on the roles of surveillance (and its citizen-based inversion, sousveillance) in urban cultures. Specially installed Wi-Fi cameras transmit images to large display screens at street level and passersby are invited to control, manipulate and record the images.

Wall of Sound

An environmentally installed suite of mechanical, sound emitting ‘instruments’ that users can ‘play’ through an interface on their mobile phones. The opportunity to jam in real time with other users in the immediate vicinity creates a real world manifestation of mediated social networking.

The Memory Portal

A portable, self-contained wireless interaction kit that provides the programming and equipment infrastructure for a closed-system installation. The initial prototype will look at how a user’s memory can be recorded and triggered through voice, text and moving image. The research findings and technological innovations from this prototype will potentially be integrated into other Portage concepts/prototypes.

Dynamic Adaptive Multiuser Mapping Project

An interactive research tool that allows researchers to continually embed visual data as project references. The DAMPP allows researchers to reframe the context (and thereby rethink the contextual application) of these visuals and informational pieces as we brainstorm our concept designs (for use in future prototypes).

Workshop in a Suitcase

A suitcase that contains all the hardware (phones, cables, GPS locators, Bluetooth stations, etc.) and software required to go to locations and present a cellphone interactive experience production workshop that responds to local concerns where few to no production resources exist.

Robot Vision

A fun, public display of competing, remote controlled robots. Each will be equipped with a Wi-Fi camera allowing viewers to get up close to the action through streaming video on their cell phones.

Mobile Access Policy Report

An investigation and analysis of contemporary policy developments relating to mobile media in Canada and other countries. Our intention is to develop policy options and recommendations that will enhance research and innovation with mobile media in Canada.
